2011 University Summer Chinese Program

Interested students please contact for details on upcoming info sessions. Next info session coming up in early January.

As of May 2010 Bridges to China has been offering a specialised summer program for eligible university students in Vancouver, Canada.

This six week program in Beijing is worth six academic credits and is based on a mix of classroom teaching, partner based learning, fun activities and travel.

This trip is made possible by several students working on a volunteer basis to bring everyone lower tuition fees.

The central idea behind this program is our belief that in order to better learn the language and better understand the culture of a country, they must be fully immersed in it, and this is what the summer program aims to achieve.

Rather than spending time attending lectures on Chinese culture, why not experience the real thing? All students are immediately paired up with a language partner, a local Chinese student that has been chosen based on their accent, their interest in helping our students improve their Chinese, and on how friendly they are! These partners join students on all the trips around Beijing and out of the city, providing everyone with an opportunity to use what they have learnt in the classroom.

The summer program includes two weekend trips out of Beijing, each lasting two days and one night.

We'll travel to nearby Tianjin, where students will have the chance to learn Tianjin Kuaiban, a method of Chinese storytelling that somewhat resembles today's rap.

Other fun events include stuffing oneself with Tianjin's famous 'Gou Bu Li' steamed buns and lots of free time.

Our second weekend trip takes us to the beaches of Beidaihe, where the Great Wall of China meets the sea. It's not everyday that you have the chance to climb the Great Wall of China and then dive into the waters below, this trip is all about relaxing with the locals and experiencing Chinese life on the beaches.

The stay in Beijing is also full of events, from traditional sightseeing to a water pistol fight in the gardens of Beijing's Summer Palace and hiking an abandoned section of the Great Wall.

All events and trips will have equal numbers of participants and local Chinese students, meaning lots of opportunities to practice speaking Chinese!

Classes take place in Beijing Jiaotong University, carefully chosen for easier immersion and the cultural diversity within. Beijing Jiaotong University is home to a far smaller foreign student population than many other universities in Beijing, and is one of the top universities in China.

Program fees include:

Tuition in China
Accommodation in shared double room
Weekend trips and activities
Language partner program

Total fees: approximately CA $2200 (at this time still subject to slight changes)
